- STR’s on Y Chromosome exhibit less diversity than those on other chromosomes because they don’t undergo recombination. STR diversity on Y chromosome results solely from mutations.
- There are 46 chromosomes in most cells of the human
body. The body is made up of many different cells that are the building
blocks for the various tissues and organ systems in our body. We get 23
chromosomes from each of our parents, therefore we end up with 46.
- Chromosomes are the packaging for our genetic material, or DNA. DNA carries a specific code that gives instructions to our body on how to grow, develop and function. The instructions are organized into units called genes. To the right, there is a picture of DNA on a chromosome. Within this DNA sequence, there are short tandem repeat markers.
